Tea for Two

--

Submitted to NYC Midnight’s 2024 100-word Microfiction Challenge. Didn’t make it to Round 2, but I really like what I came up with. I’ve made some edits based on the feedback received by the judges. My prompt was…

Genre: Romance // Subject: Making tea // Required word: turn

You are a dream made flesh, clad in thrift shop finds. Your secondhand boots made impressions in the street: footprints, head-turns, heartbeats. I tug at my skirt; too hot for a cold day.

The teapot arrives with a jar of red buds. I try to to begin, but my limbs are stiff as a doll’s.

“We do it ourselves,” you say. You reach for the pot with hands made to cradle porcelain.

“Like any good thing,” I reply. You smile and I shatter free as you fill your cup with blossoms-to-be.
